MORNING / CHP CIRCUIT: Agriculteurs Methaniseurs du Pays Boulageois (AMDPB)

Located in Boulay industrial park, this agricultural anaerobic digestion plant with CHP doesn't just produce electricity; it also provides the heat to a swimming pool and sports complex.

This project was initiated by five farmers. These “Biogas Producing Farmers of the Boulageois district” (AMDPB) are first and foremost livestock and cereal farmers, who decided to club together with a view to diversifying their activities. They spent almost ten years hitting up against local resistance and seeking new locations before finding an acceptable installation site. The plant was finally commissioned in 2016 and stepped up its output in 2019, rising from 250kW to 450kW of electrical power.

The heat output is partly (15% approx.) reinjected into the plant's mains to heat the digester to the required temperature of 39°C and partly (80%) used to heat the municipal swimming pool and sports complex (dojo and multi-purpose gym), complementing the gas-fired boilers already installed in these premises. The heat is transported through a 1.1km underground main to the swimming pool’s boiler plant.

What you will discover in this visit

  • Upscaling the power of an anaerobic digestion plant
  • Collaborating with town councils to serve public amenities
  • Overcoming local resistance and other problems encountered

AFTERNOON / INJECTION CIRCUIT: Méthanisation Seille Environnement

Méthanisation Seille Environnement (MSE) was created in the scope of a project that assembled 23 farmer shareholders, one cereal farming cooperative—Groupement Producteurs du Blé Dieuze-Morhange—and a specialist company in agricultural earthworks and transport, namely Kuchly.

Connected to the GRTgaz gas transport grid (400Nm³/h injected at 16 bar), it processes 54,750 tonnes a year comprising manure and slurry collected from the farmer shareholders and waste from agri-food and crop growing. The installation is subject to ICPE (environmental protection) authorization. Its output is equivalent to the yearly consumption of nearly 9,600 gas heated homes or 110 gas-fuelled buses (38.5 GWh/year or 3.5 million Nm³/year of biomethane ).

The preservation of water catchments and water quality ranks high in the project’s concerns. The plant was commissioned early in 2020 following a long development period dogged by opposition.

What you will discover in this visit

  • Injecting into the GRTgaz transport grid (400Nm³/h)
  • Initiating a regional collective project
  • Addressing water quality issues
  • Overcoming local resistance and other problems encountered
